The 21 age entry ordinance in East Lansing dramatically increased dangerous house parties. The following is a copy of a letter written by Lou Anna Simon, President of Michigan State University, to the community of East Lansing, MI regarding a 21 entry age ordinance the city government instituted there. As the letter describes, the students reacted to the ordinance with large parties that not only created havoc in the neighborhoods, but also caused large-scale riots requiring the use of tear gas by police to control them. A 21 entry age ordinance simply does not create harmony or reduce drinking in the community.
